Expectations for Shoulder Surgery Recovery
If you’re preparing for shoulder surgery, you’re probably curious as to what the surgery recovery process timeline will be. Today in the Pearl Recovery Retreat & Wellness blog, we’ll talk about what you can expect from shoulder surgery recovery.
Immediately After Your Surgery
After your surgery you can expect some pain and discomfort, so you’ll want to rest your shoulder and listen to what your doctor suggests. You’ll be given a sling to wear. This will keep your arm steady and stable. This way you don’t overexert your shoulder during the surgery recovery process. After you’ve rested for a bit and the doctor checks for complications, you should be released the same day. You’ll be given painkillers for your pain and discomfort, so make sure you have someone else to drive you where you need to go. At this point, you can either go home and have a friend or family member monitor you, or you can rest up in a luxurious Pearl Recovery Retreat & Wellness recovery room.
The Next Few Weeks
Over the next few weeks, you’ll still feel some discomfort, and your amount of activity will be limited. Make sure you’re following what your care sheet suggests and doing whatever physical therapy exercises you’ve been assigned. You’ll want to avoid lifting anything heavy too. Continue taking your pain medication as directed. Make sure you’re getting plenty of rest during the surgery recovery process, so your body can properly heal.
6 Weeks and Beyond
Normally, after six weeks of shoulder surgery recovery, people are able to go back to work and continue their normal routines. If your job is strenuous, it’s best to ask your doctor if you’re ready to get back to work. Some people are ready before six weeks, but six weeks is a pretty good rule of thumb. You may still need to attend physical therapy sessions as ongoing recovery. Remember, you never want to rush the recovery process. Take it slow, follow your doctor’s instructions, and rest up. This is the best and quickest path to getting back to your normal life.
