Guide to Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Times
By far our most asked question regarding cosmetic surgery, people want to know how long they will need off from work or other life responsibilities. With any invasive surgery, recovery times are going to vary. However, some general timeframes can be handy when planning your life around cosmetic surgery. Read our blog below to learn some common recovery times people experience when having a cosmetic procedure.
Keep in Mind: Surgery Recovery Times Vary
There are multiple factors that can influence the time your cosmetic surgery recovery takes, including the procedure itself and the general health of the patient. It is best to use these times as a jumping-off-point for your planning process and to discuss specifics with your doctor.
When asking for time off it is best to be conservative with your recovery estimates. It is better to have extra time off then to return to work before your body has had a chance to fully heal. In addition, the level of physical activity of your job can influence the time required to return. An office job is going to be much less difficult on a healing body than somewhere you need to lift heavy objects. If you are getting a more visible cosmetic surgery, such as rhinoplasty, bruising and swelling very likely will last past these estimated recovery times.
Average Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Time
Botox and Chemical Peels – Generally, very little recovery time is needed and normal activity can resume after the procedure. Though redness and swelling may occur for a few days.
Breast Augmentation – Usually 1-2 weeks to recover, though swelling will last much longer and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks.
Breast Reduction – You will need at least a few days to a week to recover from breast reduction surgery. However, strenuous activity should be avoided for up to a month.
Breast Lift – You can expect at least 1 week off for rest and surgery recovery, however again strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for around a month.
Eyelid Surgery – Stitches are usually removed after 5-7 days, but surgery recovery can last for around 2 weeks. Make-up is generally safe to use by day eight.
Liposuction – Depending on how sore you are you can generally resume normal activity within a few days. Doctors often recommend a gradual increase in activity to assist with healing.
Rhinoplasty – You may need to keep your head elevated for the first few days after surgery. And it generally takes 10 to 14 days for the majority of the swelling and bruising to improve. Strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks.
Tummy Tuck – A tummy tuck is a fairly major procedure and requires a longer surgery recovery time. It is best to consult with your doctor, as the extent of the procedure is the biggest factor in recovery time. You can safely expect to be limited in activity for three to four weeks at minimum.
As always, consult with your doctor before making plans to get more specific estimates that tailor to your procedure and general health level.
