5 Things to Consider if You’re Thinking About Facelift Plastic Surgery

Before choosing to undergo any surgical procedure, potential patients should do as much research as possible. At Pearl Recovery Retreat and Wellness, our goal is to aid you in your surgery prep process with articles full of basic tips on everything from plastic surgery aftercare to orthopedic procedures.

Going through a facial plastic surgery such as a facelift is a unique challenge. Just think of how visible the face is and how often you need to use it throughout the day! Healing is a factor to consider, too — on average, facelift recovery patients take about two weeks. To prep for your procedure, here are five important facelift facts to get you ready for your time in recovery!

Facelift Facts You Need to Know

Facelift Fact #1. Facelifts Don’t Really Turn Back Time

Facelift plastic surgery may make you look younger, but it doesn’t actually reverse the effects of aging seen in the skin. It sounds obvious, but it can be easy to forget when you look so incredible after! During a facelift, your surgeon will tug back the skin on your face and suture the muscles into place to maintain an aesthetically pleasing appearance of elasticity, evenness, and smoothness. However, any signs of aging or damage in the skin itself (such as brown spots) will not disappear.

There are experimental new procedures and technologies out there that aim to reverse aging in the skin, but none of them have yet been proven effective. The best way to slow the aging process is, as it always was, to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Pair your facelift plastic surgery with healthier living habits, and you’ll feel and look younger, longer. If you’d like some professional help, you can always find a specialized anti-aging doctor, such as an expert in nutrition or geriatrics, and talking to them about supplements, diet, and positive living.

Facelift Fact #2. The Results Last, Most Of The Time

A 2012 NCBI study reports that 76% of participating facelift recipients still looked younger 5.5 years after their surgery, while 21% lost the effects of the surgery. By taking major steps to ensure your recovery process goes smoothly, you can significantly improve the results of your facelift and make it last longer. To start, listen to all your surgeon’s facelift plastic surgery recovery tips, which might include:

  • Getting bed rest,
  • Staying entertained,
  • Eating nutritious foods,
  • Minimizing UV ray exposure,
  • Cutting down on alcohol and tobacco, etc.

Facelift Fact #3. Facelifts Are For The Lower Face

It’s a surprisingly little known fact that facelifts take place on the lower half of the face. During facelift plastic surgery, your surgeon tightens the skin and reduces creases on the nose, mouth, neck, and jaw. That doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to get a younger look in your eyes as well as mouth! You just need to ask your surgeon about combining the facelift with another procedure such as a brow lift or eyelid surgery. Deeper surgery such as a rhinoplasty could also be performed at the same time as a facelift, but that will depend on your health and other considerations.

Facelift Fact #4. Scars Are Easy To Hide

Your facelift scars will fade significantly during the first year after your surgery. As time goes on, however, the incision scars will never completely fade away. Fortunately, modern facelift plastic surgery techniques allow surgeons to keep incisions tiny and hide scars in inconspicuous parts of the face including the hairline and behind the ear. Whether you keep your hair down or sweep it up, you should have an easy time keeping your scars a personal secret unless you choose to show them.

Facelift Fact #5. Time Off Will Be Mandatory

One of the most inconvenient facts about facelifts is that recovery cannot be rushed. Bruising and swelling will be pronounced, especially during the first week and second week. By week three, you will appear mostly healed and should be able to return to life as normal.

After a facelift plastic surgery, taking time off from your routine is mandatory. A minimum rest period of two weeks is best. You’ll need a lot of rest as your skin heals. You will also need to adapt to an adjusted diet, range of movement, and personal look. The good news is that you don’t need to go through it alone. We highly recommend getting support from family, friends or private duty caregivers during this time.
