5 Things to Consider If You’re Thinking About Brow Lift Surgery

If your face doesn’t highlight your true emotions, you may be considering a brow lift surgery. The brow lift procedure is commonly used to reposition sagging brows that can give the impression that you’re sad, concerned, or angry, even when you’re smiling inside. The surgery may also be used in conjunction with a facelift to smooth forehead lines and rejuvenate the eyes, providing a more youthful and refreshed look.

5 Important Brow Lift Procedure & Recovery Facts

1. There Are Different Types of Brow Lifts

A skilled surgeon should be able to offer different types of brow lifts depending on your unique needs and preferences. The procedure has evolved a great deal over the years, and you may even be able to have minimally invasive brow lift surgery. There are three main types of brow lift procedures, and your surgeon should be able to recommend the best option to meet your goals.

Coronal Brow Lift: The coronal brow lift is the classic brow lift procedure. At one point, it was the only option available. It’s the most invasive of the three surgeries, so it is usually reserved for more severe cases.

In this procedure, the surgeon makes a single, ear-to-ear incision behind the hairline. Next, they remove and excess skin, tissue, and fat. Then, they’ll modify and reposition the muscles, tissues, and skin.

Endoscopic Brow Lift: Endoscopic brow lift surgery is becoming increasingly popular because it’s significantly less invasive while still (in some cases) providing the same results. It’s not always a viable option, but it’s certainly worth discussing with your surgeon.

This brow lift procedure is similar to a coronal brow lift, except the surgeon doesn’t need to make a single, long incision. Instead, they make multiple small incisions—usually less than one inch long—behind the hairline. Then they reposition the muscles and tissues with the aid of a tiny camera and thin tools.

Temporal Brow Lift: A temporal brow lift procedure is usually done alongside eyelid surgery as it relies on some of the same incisions.

This type of brow lift surgery is similar to the endoscopic brow lift, but the incisions are slightly longer (usually around one inch), and they’re made above each temple instead of behind the hairline. The surgeon uses these incisions to adjust the outer brow before then adjusting the inner brow area through the incisions that were already made for eyelid surgery.

2. You May Have Other Options

Before booking your appointment, you may want to look into non-surgical anti-aging alternatives. If you only have mild furrows and lines, you may be able to achieve ideal results without having brow lift surgery at all!

Dermal fillers are a common non-surgical facial rejuvenation choice for patients who want to add volume to their faces and get rid of stubborn wrinkles. The practitioner injects hyaluronic acid behind the eyebrows, temples, and forehead skin to add just enough subtle volume to give a similar appearance to a brow lift. The results typically last for around a year, so it’s not a permanent solution.

Botox injections are another alternative to brow lift surgery. They’re usually used to target lines caused by years of muscle contractions—crow’s feet and laugh lines, for example. The practitioner injects Botox into the target areas to paralyze the muscles causing those lines. The results typically last for around four months before another treatment is required.

Laser resurfacing is another popular brow lift alternative-procedure for patients who simply want a more youthful appearance. The practitioner uses lasers to remove layers of skin, naturally eliminating surface-level blemishes, scars, and wrinkles. This treatment won’t stop drooping brows, but it can be a less invasive way to enhance that facial area without brow lift surgery.

3. Choosing the Right Plastic Surgeon Is Important

You should always research your options when considering cosmetic medical procedures, but doing your due diligence is especially critical when considering a brow lift procedure. After all, even a minor flaw could affect your self-confidence.

First, avoid any surgeon who’s not certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Discounted surgeries may be enticing, but the potential plastic surgery complications that may arise from cheap work simply aren’t worth it. Next, you should seek out a surgeon who has experience working on people similar to you. Consider factors such as your age, gender, and ethnicity, as well as any unique facial features.

Be sure to ask surgeons you’re considering for before and after pictures. Finally, spend some time researching reviews from other patients who have used the surgeon for brow lift surgery. An experienced surgeon should have an online presence. Make sure you don’t run into any red flags.

4. Insurance Doesn’t Usually Cover Brow Lifts

In most cases, brow lift procedures aren’t covered by health insurance. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a brow lift was $3,623 in 2018. However, that number can go up or down depending on a myriad of factors. If you’re not able to afford to pay for your brow lift surgery, you may be able to find a practitioner who offers payment plans.

In addition to the surgery itself, you may have to cover the following expenses:

  • Tests
  • Anesthesia
  • Surgeon’s Fee
  • Prescription Medications
  • Facility Costs
  • Post-Surgery Garments

5. Recovery Times Vary

Most patients can resume light activities within a week or so after their brow lift procedure, although time frames vary depending on the severity of the procedure. After a week, you’ll probably still feel fatigued and vulnerable, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Most patients can return to normal activities within two to four weeks. Again, recovering from a brow lift can take longer, so be sure to discuss recovery after surgery times with your surgeon and plan accordingly.
